Ghana Athletics President, Bawa Fuseini, has expressed his disappointment over the empty stadium during the opening ceremony of the African Athletics Championship, describing the situation as “very unfortunate and sad.”
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sportstiger on Original TV, Fuseini highlighted that the low attendance at the event’s launch contrasts with Ghana’s growing reputation as a credible host of elite continental sporting events.
The African Athletics Championship, held in Accra, not only tests Ghana’s organizational capabilities but also showcases the nation on the global sports stage.
Ahead of the competition, a two-day Council and Technical Meeting by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) is scheduled, drawing international athletics figures, including World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum. Their presence underscores the global significance of the championship.
Fuseini emphasized that while attendance was lower than expected, the championship remains an important milestone for Ghanaian athletics and offers an opportunity to demonstrate the country’s ability to host major international sports events.
