Bawku conflict: Ghana’s reputation as West Africa’s beacon of peace at stake – AIGS

The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Bawku, Ghana’s Upper East Region, calling on the government to take immediate and decisive steps to restore peace and strengthen security.

According to AIGS, the recent violence has claimed eight lives in October 2024, underscoring the urgent need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to resolving the long-standing ethno-political dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities.

“We urge the youth of Bawku to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from actions that could further inflame tensions,” AIGS stated.

“The youth are the future of our nation, and their energy must be channeled toward building peace, not perpetuating conflict.”

AIGS is advising the Government of Ghana to enhance security measures, support mediation efforts, address the root causes of the conflict, and implement economic empowerment programs for the youth.

“Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace in West Africa is at stake, and the government must act swiftly to prevent further escalation,” AIGS warned.

The institute commended the efforts of traditional leaders, particularly Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose mediation has shown promise in resolving similar conflicts.

AIGS called on all Ghanaians to stand together in solidarity for peace, emphasizing that the Bawku crisis is not merely a regional issue but a national security concern with the potential to destabilize Ghana and the broader West African region.
