The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has called on President Mahama to take decisive action to address the security situation in Bawku, where armed Kusasi factions have been terrorizing communities, blocking roads, and killing innocent people.
MAYA, in a statement, said the reality in Bawku today is a direct result of the state’s failure to uphold law and order.
“Armed Kusasi factions, emboldened by impunity, continue to terrorize communities—blocking roads, shedding innocent blood, setting homes ablaze, and coercing residents into relinquishing their ethnic identities,” the group stated.
MAYA commended President Mahama for directing security forces to provide armed escorts for travelers along certain routes but urged him to lift the curfew imposed on Walewale.
“The curfew on Walewale has been widely perceived as a concession to Kusasi demands, seemingly aimed at penalizing the people of Mamprugu,” they said.
The group emphasized that the people of Mamprugu are peaceful and law-abiding, consistently demonstrating restraint and a commitment to peace. “If security is effectively maintained and hostilities are prevented along the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom stretch, there will be no reprisal attacks on the Bolgatanga–Walewale route,” they added.
MAYA warned that if the government fails to address the situation in Bawku, it could have far-reaching consequences for the entire country.
“If a handful of lawless elements can hold an entire community hostage without decisive state intervention, what assurance can Ghana’s citizens have in the government’s ability to safeguard peace and security across the country?” they asked.
The group urged President Mahama to translate his words into concrete, stating they “look forward to seeing fairness, justice, and meaningful results reflected in real actions on the ground.”
