Naa Bohaga Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Overlord of Mamprugu, has urged the government to take decisive action to restore peace in Bawku.
Speaking at the Nayiri Palace in Nalerigu on Thursday, April 17, 2025, the Nayiri expressed concern over recent developments in the area, where unruly youth have perpetrated unlawful acts, including arson and violence against state property.
The Nayiri commended President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to national unity and reconciliation, demonstrated by his choice of Bawku and Nalerigu as his inaugural destinations outside Accra.
However, he noted that the government must act boldly to bring errant youth responsible for infractions and lawlessness to account.
The Nayiri called on the government to increase security personnel and logistics in the area to maintain law and order.
He also urged the government to empower security forces to operate without undue political interference, safeguard economic freedom, and protect critical institutions.
The Nayiri submitted several recommendations to the government, including:
- Increasing security personnel and logistics
- Empowering security forces to operate without interference
- Safeguarding economic freedom
- Protecting critical institutions
- Unifying transport systems
- Establishing strategic checkpoints
- Installing police posts in Binduri
The Nayiri emphasized that the government must not falter in its duty to maintain law and order.
“The state must not falter in its sovereign duty to maintain law and order, or else Mamprugu shall have no option but to take the necessary measures to safeguard its people should provocations and injustices persist unchecked,” the statement read.
The Nayiri expressed condolences to the families of innocent lives lost, including police officers who fell in the line of duty, and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.
