The Bawku Naba and Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has appealed to the Nayiri of Mamprugu, Naa Mahami Bohagu Abdulai, to reconsider his rejection of the mediation outcome led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the long running Bawku conflict.
Speaking at a press conference in Bawku, the Bawku Naba called on the Nayiri to accept the mediation report in the interest of achieving lasting peace and stability in Bawku and surrounding communities.
The appeal comes after the Nayiri rejected the outcome of the Otumfuo led peace process and maintained his recognition of Alhaji Abagre Seidu as the Bawku Naba. The disagreement has continued to fuel tensions in Bawku and parts of the North East Region, particularly in Walewale and Nasia, where security concerns remain.
Addressing the impact of the conflict, Naba Azoka II urged the Nayiri to consider the hardship faced by residents who continue to live under the threat of violence and restrictions on movement.
He said accepting the mediation outcome would help create the conditions needed for peace and allow communities affected by years of insecurity to rebuild their lives.
The press conference marked the Bawku Naba’s first public address at his palace in about three years.
He called for an immediate end to hostilities and urged all parties involved in the conflict to lay down their arms and embrace dialogue and reconciliation.
The Bawku Naba also stressed the need for unity among all stakeholders, saying cooperation and peaceful coexistence were essential to restoring normal life and promoting development across Bawku and neighbouring communities.
