Bawku Security Situation: Gov’t Deploys 1000 Special Forces To Area After Killing Of Immigration Officer

Following the attack on some immigration officers by unknown gunmen in Bawku, the government has deployed about 100o Special Forces to the area to enhance security.

The attack which happened on Monday, April 3, 2o23 led to the death of one immigration officer while the two other officers sustained serious gunshot injuries.

The two are currently battling for their lives at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital. Preliminary reports indicate that the three officers were attacked by these armed men whiles on their way from Bawku to Missiga to buy food from a nearby police station.

Following the incident, the government deployed the Special Forces including officers from both the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Service to Bawku in order to increase the security of the area and also assist in the investigations to uncover the culprits.

This move by the government was disclosed by the Regional Minister of the Upper East Region and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Stephen Yakubu on Wednesday in an interview with Accra-based JoyNews.

“REGSEC, we are intensifying, government is helping us by bringing in Special Forces to Bawku, about 1,000 of them both police and soldiers. Some are already at Bawku. Camps are already being built to house these soldiers,” the Regional Minister disclosed.

“I can tell you that we are in control of the situation. Government is helping us otherwise it would have been worse than this,” he assured.
