Bawumia chooses NAPO as running mate, official announcement later this week

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has selected Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as his running mate for the December 7 presidential election.

According to Metro TV’s Presidential Affairs correspondent Eugenia Akorfa Kumi, Dr Bawumia presented his choice to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at a meeting last night at the Jubilee House.

She reports there will be an official announcement later this week.

The President offered advice and accepted Dr Bawumia’s choice.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a 56-year-old medical doctor, has served as Education Minister and is widely preferred among party members, according to a recent NIB survey.

This revelation comes barely 24 hours after traders in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region capital rallied behind him.

Speaking to Metro TV’s Ashanti Regional correspondent Abdul Basit Suleman, the traders at the Kejetia and Race Course markets appealed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to consider Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO as the running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to them, Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s achievements, particularly in implementing the Free Senior High School policy, make him an ideal candidate to boost the party’s fortunes in the Ashanti Region.
