The Member of Parliament (MP) for Binduri, Issifu Mahmoud, has boldly declared that any candidate from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would easily defeat the recently elected flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview on Metro TV’s News Night with Desmond Okraku Danso on Saturday February 14, the Binduri MP dismissed Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy as a non-issue for the NDC, asserting that the former Vice President’s track record would work against him in future elections.
He added that even any of the NDC MPs in Parliament could defeat him if given the chance to contest.
“Anybody in the NDC can match up to Dr. Bawumia and defeat him soundly in the 2028 presidential election. Even all the NDC MPs in Parliament can defeat him. I believe if they had elected another candidate during the NPP Presidential Primaries, that would be another discussion, but as for Dr. Bawumia, it was welcoming news for the NDC,” the Binduri legislator stated confidently.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has served as Vice President from 2017 to 2024, contested the 2024 presidential elections but was beaten by the current President John Dramani Mahama with about 1.7 million votes. Even after suffering what many poll watchers described as a humiliating defeat, the former Vice President was elected as the NPP’s flagbearer in January 31, 2026 after a fiercely contested primary, to lead the NPP again into the 2028 presidential elections. His victory was widely celebrated within the NPP, with many describing him as the most marketable candidate capable of appealing to a broad spectrum of the electorate, including floating voters.
However, the MP for Binduri Issifu Mahmoud dismissed such claims, arguing that Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as the head of the Economic Management Team (EMT) under the NPP government had left a legacy of economic struggles that would haunt his political future.
“Well, I did not know how marketing the NPP did not market Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 elections, but what did we see? Who doesn’t know Bawumia? He is only known for telling untruths. He is known for poor management of the economy and flipping on his statements. What do people need to know again?” Mahmoud questioned.
The Binduri MP went on to criticize Dr. Bawumia’s handling of Ghana’s economy during his tenure, citing the depreciation of the cedi, high inflation rates, and general economic hardships that characterized his leadership as head of the EMT.
“We can remember the exchange rate when he was the head of the economic management team. We know where he left the economy before exiting office, and we know where the inflation rate was when he was leaving office. But the situation has changed drastically today under John Dramani Mahama.”
The Binduri MP further argued that Dr. Bawumia’s perceived marketing strength within the NPP would not translate into electoral success, alleging that his political brand was already marred by what he described as “broken promises and failed economic policies,” emphasizing that the NDC had proven its ability to manage the economy better.
“So, what kind of marketing can bring the best strategies out of him? Nothing will change for the NPP as far as Dr. Bawumia remains the flagbearer of the NPP. It will make the work of the NDC easy going into the 2028 elections. Just mark my words when that time comes.”
