Bawumia lied about Ghana Card being usable abroad – Mahama

Former President and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for misleading Ghanaians over the use of the Ghana Card as a substitute for a passport.

Speaking in a recent address, Mahama recounted an incident involving a member of his entourage who was prevented from traveling due to an expired passport. According to Mahama, the individual was unaware that their passport had expired and was consequently denied permission to board a flight.

In an attempt to resolve the situation, Mahama reportedly suggested that the Ghana Card could be used as an alternative to a passport. However, when they approached immigration officials, Mahama’s claims were swiftly rebuffed.

“I told them that the Ghana Card could be used instead of a passport,” Mahama explained.

“But the immigration officers denied this, stating that the Ghana Card cannot be used in place of a passport.”

Dr. Bawumia, who has championed the government’s push for digitalization and the promotion of the Ghana Card, has previously suggested that the card could be used for international travel in place of a passport, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region.
