National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has called on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be transparent concerning the funding of his campaign.
According to him, accusations by David Hundeyin, a popular Nigerian Journalist that a foreign group is sponsoring Mr. Bawumia’s run for the New Patriotic Party flagbearership is unconstitutional.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu believes the accusation can have damaging implications on the Vice President and his campaign if not addressed on time.
Section 24 of the Political Parties Act (ACT 574) states that “A non-citizen shall not directly or indirectly make a contribution or donation or loan whether in cash or in kind to the funds held by or for the benefit of a political party and no political party or person acting for or on behalf of a political party shall demand or accept a contribution donation or loan from a non-citizen.”
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Felix Kwakye Ofosu expressed his surprise on how the “operatives in the Vice President’s Office and he [Dr. Bawumia] himself do not appear to have taken interest in this matter” as the hournalist in question has quite a significant following on Twitter.
From his standpoint, the Vice President should not ignore the alleged claim as done to other issues.
“Unlike the economic malice, the exchange rate, the debt exchange and the precipitous decline and collapse of the Ghanaian economy which he Vice President has avoided like a plaque, this is not one of the things he can avoid because it is quite damaging. If it turns out to be true…I hope it is not true… so that at the very least, he does not have to concern himself with illegality on top of the hopelessness and incompetence that he has displayed of the Ghanaian economy,” he said.
David Hundenyin on July 16, 2023, took to his Twitter page and alleged that ACF (Awera Consultative Forum) is funding Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2024 Election which is in contrast with the laws of the land.
The tweet has sparked debate across social media platforms but the Vice President Dr. Bawumia is yet to comment on the matter.
