Former Special Prosecutor, Martin A. B. K. Amidu, has disputed Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s claim of being the first incumbent presidential candidate to concede defeat before the Electoral Commission’s official declaration.
According to Amidu, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the then Vice President and incumbent presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), conceded defeat to the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, John Agyekum Kufuor, in the 2000 presidential runoff election.
He cited a statement from Mills, saying, “As an outgoing government, we pledge to make his transition into office as smooth as possible.”
This concession was made before the Electoral Commission officially declared the results.
Martin Amidu, who was the running mate of the late Prof. Atta Mills, argued that Bawumia’s claim is “economical with the truth” and that he is not the first incumbent candidate to concede defeat.
He also questioned Bawumia’s motives, suggesting that he may be trying to project himself for the 2028 presidential elections.
The former Attorney General emphasized the importance of political integrity, stating that the survival of the 1992 Constitution is anchored upon putting Ghana first, rather than relying on political deception.
