Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has thrown his full support behind New Patriotic Party flagbearer-elect, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, calling on party members to put differences aside and focus on winning the next general election.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV on February 3, 2026, the former Deputy Energy Minister said the most important outcome of the party’s presidential primaries was Dr Bawumia’s victory, stressing that unity was now crucial.
“My only concern is Bawumia won,” Mr Mercer said during the discussion with host Moro Awudu.
The former Tourism Minister reaffirmed his loyalty to the leadership of the party and urged supporters to rally behind Dr Bawumia as preparations begin for the 2028 elections.
According to him, the party must now channel its energy into supporting the flagbearer-elect and strengthening the campaign message, rather than dwelling on internal divisions.
Mr Mercer said he has confidence in Dr Bawumia’s leadership and believes he has the experience and commitment to do better if given the mandate to lead the country.
He described the NPP flagbearer-elect as disciplined and hardworking, adding that his track record gives him confidence in what he can offer Ghana.
Mr Mercer said unity within the party would be key to winning the confidence of voters and positioning the NPP strongly ahead of the next election.
