Ghana’s Black Maidens (Women U-17) defeated their Nigerian counterparts on penalties after a 2-2 draw to win the inaugural edition of the WAFU Zone B U-17 Girls Cup at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram.
The Black Maidens got off to a quick start, taking the lead in the 13th minute when Getrude Amoafoa hammered the ball into the net after the goalkeeper mishandled the ball from a corner-kick.
Priscilla Mensah extended Ghana’s advantage in the 18th minute with a well-placed low shot that found the bottom corner, leaving the Nigerian goalkeeper with no chance.
However, the Super Flamingos responded in the 33rd minute with a goal from Precious Chiemerie Oscar, narrowing the gap. In the 78th minute, Chidera Harmony Chidi equalized for Nigeria, sending the match into a penalty shootout.
Ghana won the shootout 5-4, marking a significant comeback by clinching the inaugural WAFU Zone B U-17 Girls Cup after a period of inactivity due to a ban.
