Ghana’s Black Queens delivered their best performance yet at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), defeating Tanzania 4-1 to secure qualification to the quarterfinal stage.
After a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mali and a narrow 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa, the Black Queens came into their final group game needing a win and they delivered in emphatic style.
The match got off to a strong start for Ghana as forward Princella Adubea found the back of the net in the 12th minute, giving the Queens an early advantage but Tanzania equalized before halftime courtesy of Stumai Abdallah.
The breakthrough came again in the second half when Ghana was awarded a penalty, which Alice Kusi calmly converted in the 63rd minute to double the lead. The Tanzanians managed to pull one back, but the Queens held their composure.
Late in the game, Ghana turned on the style after Evelyn Badu was replaced in Princess Marfo’s position and added a third goal in the 88th minute. However, attacker Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah capped off the night with a fourth goal in the 90th minute, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 win and bagged the woman of the match award for the night.
The victory sees Ghana finish second in Group C with 4 points, behind South Africa who top the group with 7 points after three matches. Mali, also on 4 points, drop to third due to goal difference. Tanzania, with just 1 point, exit the tournament without reaching the quarterfinals.
With qualification secured, Ghana now turns their attention to the quarterfinals, where they will face host nation Algeria on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. It promises to be a tightly contested match, as both sides fight for a spot in the semifinals.
