Twenty-six players have been called up to the Black Satellites for a mini tournament taking place from March 17-25, as part of their preparations for the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
The squad is primarily composed of players based abroad, with only eight plying their trade domestically. These players include Saeed Yakubu (Medeama), Maxwell Azafoke (Inter Allies), Ansah Abdul Manaf (Emmanuel City), and Kelvin Ahiable (Dreams FC).
Other local players are Ismael Addo (Hearts of Lions), Hayford Adu Boahen (Cheetah FC), Edmund Asante (Vision FC), and Musibau Aziz (Dreams FC).
Among the foreign-based players are Abdul Hakim Sulemana (Randers FC), Emmanuel Mensah (Sogndal IL), Mccarthy Ofori (FK Bylis), and Aaron Essel (St. Johnstone FC), all of whom were part of the team that helped Ghana win gold at the All African Games last year.
The mini tournament will offer the technical team a chance to further assess the players ahead of the African Youth Championship.
In preparation for the tournament, the Black Satellites have been playing friendly matches against Premier League clubs, including Accra Hearts of Oak, Nations FC, and Heart of Lions, as well as lower-tier sides in Accra.
Ghana has been placed in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, DR Congo, and one team from the Central African Football Federations Union (UNIFAC) for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place from April 26 to May 18, 2025.
As one of Africa’s powerhouses in youth football, Ghana boasts an impressive record, having won the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations four times (1993, 1999, 2009, and 2021) and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009.
