Ghana international Gideon Mensah has completed a free transfer to Bundesliga club FC Köln, signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the German side until 2028.
The 27-year-old left-back joins Köln after ending his four-year spell with French Ligue 1 club AJ Auxerre, where he developed into one of the team’s most reliable performers.
Mensah arrives in Germany following an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign in North America. The Black Stars defender played every minute of Ghana’s four matches as the team reached the Round of 32 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
The experienced defender became a free agent after his contract with Auxerre expired, with both parties unable to agree on a contract extension.
During the 2025/26 Ligue 1 season, Mensah was instrumental in Auxerre’s successful battle against relegation. He made 30 league appearances and contributed two assists, underlining his importance at both ends of the pitch.
Mensah initially joined Auxerre on loan from Red Bull Salzburg in 2021 before completing a permanent move a year later. Across his time in France, he established a reputation for his defensive consistency, composure on the ball, and ability to contribute in attack.
His move to FC Köln marks a return to German football and offers the Bundesliga club an experienced international defender ahead of the 2026/27 season.
With over 70 appearances for Ghana and valuable experience in Ligue 1 and European competitions, Mensah is expected to strengthen Köln’s defensive options as the club prepares for the challenges of the new campaign.
