Black Stars Draw 1-1 with Wales in Carlos Queiroz’s Debut

Ghana’s Black Stars ended a run of four consecutive defeats with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Wales in an international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday. The match also marked the debut of Carlos Queiroz as head coach, as the team ramps up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Wales started strongly, dominating possession in the opening half and coming close to an early lead. Dan James’s header in the 11th minute was brilliantly tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, keeping Ghana in the game. Marvin Senaya also had a chance to score before halftime, but his deflected shot was tipped over the crossbar by Darlow.

Queiroz shook things up at the break, bringing on Benjamin Asare, Kwasi Sibo, Ernest Nuamah, and Brandon Thomas-Asante. The substitutions injected pace and creativity into Ghana’s attack, and the breakthrough came in the 66th minute.

Ernest Nuamah raced through the Wales defense, only to have his effort saved by Darlow. Caleb Yirenkyi reacted quickest, striking the post and following up to fire home, giving Ghana a 1-0 lead.
