Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has questioned the long-term suitability of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, insisting Ghana needs a younger and more ambitious manager to build a successful future.
Queiroz was appointed after Otto Addo’s departure on a short-term contract with less than three months to prepare the Black Stars for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite the limited time and criticism of his cautious tactical style, the experienced Portuguese coach guided Ghana to the Round of 32, marking the country’s first appearance in the knockout stages since the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
While acknowledging the team’s progress, Afriyie believes Queiroz may not be the right coach to lead Ghana’s long-term football project. Speaking on Adom TV, he argued that the Black Stars require a younger coach with the drive and ambition to build a competitive team capable of challenging for major honours.
According to Afriyie, a defensive approach alone is unlikely to bring sustained success at the highest level.
“No coach who adopts defensive tactics wins trophies. If we keep Carlos Queiroz for one or two years, we will eventually sack him. What motivation does he have to win a trophy for Ghana?” Afriyie said.
