Black Stars’ new Technical Advisor Winfred Schaeffer urges players to put team first, leave egos behind

Newly appointed Technical Advisor for the Black Stars, Winfred Schaeffer, has emphasized that success will come when the players work together as a team.

The Black Stars have faced challenges in recent years, including failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, exiting the group stages of the 2021 and 2023 AFCON, and missing out on the 2022 World Cup.

Despite these setbacks, Schaeffer, who joins the team as technical advisor, believes the team has strong individual players. However, he stressed that collective effort is key to success.

“Ghana has very good players, very good players around in Europe, the local players and the players born in Ghana who play in Europe. These three types of players we have to bring together. That’s very important. Not the best players win matches, but the best teams win matches and when all play together,“ he said as quoted by Ghanafa.org.

“And nobody should say I am from Real Madrid, I am from Arsenal, I am from this or that. No, everybody has to be proud to wear the shirt of Ghana.

Schaeffer also stressed l the importance of a supportive backroom staff to help the players succeed.

“However, we have to work for the players. We give them respect, we help them with good training fields, and we help them with good pitches for football.”

“I think we have a good backroom staff including the Doctor, the Physio, and the coach, Otto. And then we have a big picture so we can go to the states all together, From the President, to the Minister, the Coaches, the Staff, and the players all together. We can do it,“ he added.

The German’s first responsibility as Black Stars Technical Advisor will be to guide the team through the World Cup qualifiers. Ghana will host Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025, before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar on Monday, March 24, 2025.
