BoG Sets October 28 for Grand Launch of Cedi@60 Anniversary Celebration

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced October 28, 2025 as the new date to officially launch the Cedi@60 Anniversary, marking six decades of Ghana’s national currency and economic sovereignty.

Originally scheduled for August, the celebration was postponed in honour of the victims of the tragic helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region that claimed eight lives. The central bank has since rescheduled the event to ensure a fitting national commemoration.

The 60th-anniversary festivities will begin with a national launch ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre, with President John Mahama gracing the occasion as Special Guest of Honour.

A series of nationwide activities have been lined up, including a Cedi Van Regional Roadshow, currency exhibitions, educational and outreach programmes, and public education campaigns focusing on clean note handling, currency security features, and the rich history of Ghana’s currency journey.

In addition, the Bank of Ghana will host a high-level Currency Conference, bringing together stakeholders from central banks around the world, academia, and the private sector to discuss the evolution, challenges, and innovations shaping modern currency systems.

“The Cedi@60 anniversary is a moment of national reflection and pride — an opportunity to celebrate six decades of monetary sovereignty, deepen public understanding of our financial heritage, and inspire future generations to uphold the integrity of the cedi,” the BoG said in a statement.

The commemoration harks back to July 19, 1965, when Ghana officially adopted the Cedi as its national currency, marking a defining moment in the country’s post-independence economic identity.

Over the decades, the Cedi has evolved through multiple reforms and redesigns, reflecting Ghana’s resilience, policy innovation, and enduring quest for economic progress. Today, it stands not just as a medium of exchange but as a symbol of national pride and sovereignty.

As the Cedi turns 60, the Bank of Ghana invites all Ghanaians to join in celebrating the story of the nation’s currency — past, present, and future.
