The Borteyman Sports Complex is without electricity due to unpaid power arrears, a situation that has significantly limited activities at the facility and raised serious concerns about its management and maintenance.
This came to light on Tuesday when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports toured key sports facilities in Accra as part of a monitoring exercise to assess their condition and operations.
Led by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Henry Ernest Norgbey, the team began its visit at the Borteyman Sports Complex, where officials disclosed that the facility has been operating without power because of outstanding electricity bills. The absence of electricity has reduced the number of sporting events hosted at the complex, leaving much of the facility underused.

Members of the Committee also observed poor management practices, inadequate maintenance, and problems with the underground drainage system beneath the pitch, all of which were said to be affecting the overall condition of the complex.
The Committee later visited the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, where management briefed members on daily operations and challenges. These included infrastructure defects, the high cost of replacing damaged equipment, inadequate maintenance tools, and interference from some stakeholders, which management said complicates effective facility control.
The final stop was the Accra Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing maintenance works. Issues identified there included faulty water systems, defective floodlights and scoreboard, as well as washroom facilities that were described as unsuitable for public use.
Despite the challenges, the Committee commended the management of both the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for their efforts to keep their facilities functional under difficult circumstances.
Hon. Norgbey assured facility managers that the Committee would engage the Ministry of Sports to address the problems identified, particularly the power supply situation at the Borteyman Sports Complex, to ensure that the nation’s sports infrastructure is properly maintained and fully operational.
