Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Eric Asare, will step down from his position effective July 31, 2026, the government has announced.
The disclosure was made by Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during a media briefing on Monday, June 15.
According to the Minister, Dr Asare has formally notified President John Dramani Mahama of his decision to leave the Commission after years of service.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that Dr Asare’s resignation is motivated by his intention to return to academia and continue his professional career at the University of Ghana, where he previously served as a lecturer.
He noted that in his resignation letter, Dr Asare expressed appreciation to both the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve in one of the country’s most important constitutional institutions.
The announcement comes at a time when the Electoral Commission is already undergoing leadership changes. The government’s spokesperson revealed that another Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Samuel Tettey, has retired from office.
As a result, constitutional processes have been activated to fill the vacancy created by Mr Tettey’s retirement. According to the Minister, a nominee has already been submitted to the Council of State for consideration.
Once the Council completes its assessment, an official announcement will be made regarding the appointment of a new Deputy Chairperson.
Government officials say attention will subsequently turn to identifying a replacement for Dr Asare ahead of his departure at the end of July.
