The Deputy Communications Director of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal-Deen Abdulai, has called on the party to boycott any potential by-election in Akwatia, suggesting that the constituency be given to the NDC in solidarity for the late Ernest Kumi.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, July 9, Kamal-Deen Abdulai expressed concerns about the Electoral Commission’s actions, stating that the commission seems to be favoring the NDC.
He specifically referenced the Ablekuma North election, saying, “We are saying that look, it’s not a rerun; from the collation you have done, our candidate is deemed to have won the election. So go ahead and finish collating the remaining three polling station and declare.”
Kamal-Deen outlined the importance of adhering to court orders, noting that the EC should comply with the court’s directives.
He questioned the EC’s decision to conduct a rerun in 19 polling stations, stating, “That’s what the court said; otherwise, you go back to court and find out why you’re refusing to comply with the orders of the court and doing otherwise.”
The NPP Deputy Communications Director also criticized the EC for perceived inconsistencies, referencing the recent passage of the GOLDBOD and D-Levy bills in Parliament.
“You’ve run to parliament, GOLDBOD, emergency passed it, D-Levy passed because of numbers, so why again must the NDC traumatize people?” He questioned.
Kamal-Deen Abdulai further urged the NPP to focus on the facts rather than engaging in insults and reiterated his stance on the Akwatia by-election.
“If there is going to be by-election in Akwatia, NPP should not field a candidate, give it to them (NDC) in solidarity of the late Ernest Kumi.”
