BRAC launches programme to support vulnerable communities in Ghana

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has welcomed the launch of a new social development programme by BRAC International aimed at supporting vulnerable communities across Ghana.

The initiative, launched in Accra, seeks to promote social justice, gender equality and inclusive development, with a strong focus on empowering women and girls through poverty reduction and self reliance programmes.

Speaking on behalf of the Gender Minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the ministry’s Chief Director, Dr Marian W. A. Kpakpah, said tackling poverty and vulnerability required stronger collaboration between government, civil society organisations, development partners, communities and the private sector.

She described the launch as more than a ceremonial event, saying it reflected a shared commitment to protecting human dignity and ensuring inclusive development.

“The fight against poverty and vulnerability cannot be won by governments alone,” she said. “It requires strong partnerships between civil society organisations, development partners, communities and the private sector.”

Dr Kpakpah congratulated BRAC International and its partners for expanding their work in Ghana and praised the organisation’s community based approach to development.

She said the organisation had built a strong global reputation through programmes focused on education, financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, healthcare, youth development and livelihood support, impacting millions of people across Africa and beyond.

According to her, the ministry’s mandate closely aligns with BRAC’s goals, particularly in promoting gender equality, protecting children’s rights and supporting vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities.

She added that the government remained committed to ensuring that no one was left behind in Ghana’s development agenda.

BRAC International uses an integrated social development model that combines social support, enterprise and financial inclusion programmes to help women and families build sustainable livelihoods and overcome poverty.

The launch brought together government officials, development partners, civil society groups, diplomats and members of the media.
