Accra-Winneba highway collapses at Okyereko due to river diversion by contractor

Heavy flooding has affected three communities in Central Region, displacing scores of residents and causing widespread damage.

The communities of Gomoa Mampong, Okyereko, and Adawukwa have been impacted, with three houses collapsing and several acres of farmland submerged.

The flooding has also affected onion, rice, and vegetable farms, as well as three large fishponds.

According to officials, the flooding was caused by a diversion of the natural course of the Ayensu River, which was redirected by a contractor working on a road expansion project.

The river’s new path has compromised the integrity of the road, posing a danger to commuters.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has closed the affected road to traffic. Efforts are underway to mitigate the damage and provide aid to those affected.
