Heavy flooding has cut off sections of the Cape Coast Accra highway at Biriwa in the Central Region, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded and disrupting traffic on one of the country’s busiest transport routes.
Commuters travelling from Takoradi to Accra, and from Accra through Mankessim to Cape Coast and Takoradi, faced severe delays after floodwaters submerged parts of the Biriwa Yamorasah stretch on Monday morning.
The flooding brought traffic to a standstill, with several vehicles trapped as passengers waited for hours for access to be restored.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, were deployed to the scene to assist stranded motorists and manage traffic on the affected road.
The Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, blamed the situation on what he described as negligence by the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly.
He alleged that a man identified as Mr Frimpong had filled a known waterlogged area, disrupting the natural drainage system and causing floodwaters to overflow onto the highway.
Mr Dawood said the blockage had affected movement along the main route linking Accra, Cape Coast and Takoradi, raising concerns over delays in the transportation of goods and passengers.
NADMO officials said rescue efforts were ongoing, with teams working to evacuate stranded travellers and assess damage to the affected section of the road.
The Mfantseman Municipal Assembly has not yet responded to the allegations or announced measures to prevent similar flooding in the future.
