C/R: Mixed reactions greet reintroduction of road toll levy

Some commercial drivers in Mankessim in the Mfantesman Municipal Assembly of the Central Region have welcomed the reintroduction of the road toll levy, which was cancelled by the previous government in 2022.

The drivers, who spoke to Metro TV praised the new government for the decision, but called for strategic implementation to improve road safety.

However, other drivers condemned the move, describing it as “useless” and a creator of unemployment among Ghanaian men and women who sell at vantage points of the toll centres.

They argued that they already pay a lot of money to get their vehicles on the road, and therefore prefer the road toll to remain closed forever.

Presenting the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament in Accra on Tuesday, March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced plans to reintroduce road tolls using modern technology as part of its strategy to generate revenue for infrastructure development.

According to him, the new toll system will be powered by technology to improve revenue collection, efficiency, and transparency.

Dr. Forson emphasized in his presentation that the “Big Push Programme,” a government program centered on significant infrastructure investment, will include the reintroduction of tolls.

Digital payment solutions will be used by the new system to do away with cash transactions, cut down on delays, and stop revenue leaks.
