C/R: Twifo Atti-Morkwa Hospital grapples with severe staff shortage

The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Hospital in the Central Region is currently struggling to provide essential healthcare services due to an acute shortage of permanent medical staff.

Since its commissioning in November 2020, the 160-bed facility has been left to operate without the full complement of personnel it desperately needs to serve over 30,000 residents.

The hospital’s administrator, Dr. Peter Tetteh, painted a stark picture of the daily challenges faced by the staff.

“The financial burden of hiring temporary staff is unsustainable and poses significant risks to our ability to provide timely and effective care,” he said.

Despite being a major referral point for communities in and around the district, the hospital is still waiting for the government to post permanent doctors, nurses, and key technical staff.

Dr. Tetteh stressed the need for paramedical staff, radiologists, sonographers, and specialists, in addition to basic but critical infrastructure such as staff accommodation, service vehicles, a power generator, and an ambulance.

During a recent visit to the hospital, the newly appointed District Chief Executive, Hon. Isaac Yawson, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

“We are not going to sit and watch the hospital collapse. We will explore alternatives and also engage the Health Ministry on a more permanent solution,” he assured.

Hon. Hakim Addae, a member of the Central Regional Council of State who accompanied the DCE, pledged to personally take the issue up with the Minister of Health.

“The people of Twifo Atti-Morkwa deserve better, and we must act swiftly,” he said.
