Voters in the Akwatia constituency are currently voting to elect a new Member of Parliament following the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi.
The by-election, being held across 123 polling stations, has drawn keen interest as the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) battle for control of the seat. The Electoral Commission says more than 50,000 registered voters are expected to participate.
Both parties have expressed confidence in their chances. The NDC is represented by lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, while the NPP has fielded Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
A recent survey by Global Info Analytics suggests the contest could be tight, with Baidoo projected to hold a slim lead. The poll places him at 53 percent against 47 percent for Asumadu, crediting Baidoo’s edge to support from young voters and calls for greater development in the constituency.
The outcome is being closely watched as Akwatia has long been considered an NPP stronghold, making the race a critical test for both major parties. Results are expected after polls close later today.
