Spanish club CD Lugo has officially confirmed that winger Jerry Afriyie has been called up to represent Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites, at the upcoming 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
However, the club announced that Afriyie will only be available for the first two group-stage matches of the tournament. He is scheduled to return to Spain on May 7 to rejoin his club duties.
“Jerry Afriyie, called up by Ghana FA for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. Our player joins the Ghanaian camp and will take part in the next two matches of the TotalEnergies AFCON U-20. He will return to Lugo on May 7,” the club stated.
This means Afriyie will be available for Ghana’s matches against DR Congo on Friday, May 2, and Senegal on Monday, May 5. However, he will miss the final group-stage game against the Central African Republic on May 8, as well as any knockout stage matches, should Ghana advance.
Afriyie’s early departure will be a huge blow to the Black Satellites’ who are chasing a fifth AFCON trophy and a place at the 2025 U-20 World Cup to be played in Chile later this year.
The youngster has been a key figure for the Ghana U-20 team in recent years. He played an instrumental role in Ghana’s gold medal win at the 2024 All-African Games, scoring the decisive goal in the 1-0 victory over Uganda in the final.
He also helped Ghana secure a spot at the 2025 U-20 AFCON by finishing second behind Nigeria at the WAFU B Championship, where he was named both Best Player and Top Scorer of the tournament.
