A communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Tabitha Apegyine Ayillah, has responded to criticisms from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the current state of the economy.
Tabitha Ayillah said the John Mahama government is indeed building on the foundation laid by the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana, Tabitha Ayillah emphasized the government’s efforts to strengthen the economy and enhance the cedi’s value.
“We can do the politics around cedi appreciation, but as I said earlier, even if the cedi appreciates to 1 cedi to a dollar today, I will be excited and happy about it. Because it is coming to help all of us, regardless of our political affiliation, I am all for that,” she said on Monday, May 26.
However, Tabitha Ayillah questioned the NDC’s claims about the government’s economic policies.
“If the NDC is saying that the introduction of gold or where we build our gold reserve didn’t have any impact, then that is their problem. But the question is, what has the NDC done so far to help with the cedi appreciation?” she asked.
Tabitha Ayillah highlighted the NPP’s achievements in building the country’s gold reserve and servicing loans.
“You can tell that they are building whatever they are able to do on the backbone that we (NPP) left behind. We are talking about the gold reserve that we have built so far. We are talking about the fact that we have given them more than 3 months import cover, we are talking about the fact that we serviced loans that they are yet to service.”
She also questioned the NDC’s ability to implement its flagship programs, including the 24-hour economy.
“I heard somewhere in June or July they will be servicing loans; have they made any meaningful loan servicing, have they paid anybody? NO! They are not spending, and so what do you expect? They have not even implemented their flagship program, their 24-hour economy. The question is, with even an 8-hour economy, we are having a power crisis. How are they going to now solve the 24-hour economy issue that you are trying to introduce?” She quizzed.
