Presidential Adviser and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has called for fair pricing in Ghana following the cedi’s recent surge to become the best-performing currency in the world.
According to Bloomberg, the cedi has appreciated by nearly 16% against the US dollar since April 2025.
Madam Joyce Mogtari emphasized the need for businesses to pass on the benefits of the cedi’s strength to consumers.
“If we can increase prices when the cedi weakens, we must be willing to reduce prices when the cedi strengthens,” she stated.
“That is what equity demands, and that is what ethical business practice looks like.”
She also praised the recent announcement by Orca Deco to reduce prices by 15% in response to the cedi’s strength.
“Orca Deco did not wait for pressure from the public or hide behind logistics or stock turnover excuses,” she noted.
“Instead, they acted on principle and, in doing so, set an example for the rest of the business community.”
However, Joyce Bawah Mogtari is calling on other businesses to follow Orca Deco’s example.
“Where are the rest? Where are the importers who once blamed the dollar for every increase? Where are the fuel distributors who adjusted prices upward with every cedi slide?” she asked.
She also emphasized the need for consumers to demand transparency and accountability.
“Let us not celebrate the cedi’s strength in headlines only to deny its impact on ordinary Ghanaians,” she stated.
“It is time for a reset – not just of our economy but of our mindset.”
According to her, Ghana needs a leadership approach rooted in trust, fairness, and people-centered governance, and the same must apply to the business culture.
“Our vision is clear: economic transformation not only in GDP figures but in market stalls, on supermarket shelves, in daily transportation costs, and services,” she added.
