Cervical Cancer: MSD, Ghana Health Service Urge Women to Embrace Regular Screening

MSD has reaffirmed its collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and other partners to strengthen efforts to prevent cervical cancer among women in Ghana through increased awareness and regular screening.

The company said educating women and communities about cervical cancer remains critical to encouraging more women to take advantage of available screening services and enabling early detection of the disease.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Ghana Health Service and other partners to support efforts aimed at preventing cancer among women,” said Vuyo Mjekula, Director, External Affairs, MSD SSA.

Mjekula made the remarks during an exclusive media briefing and one-on-one interview session following a closed-door high-level policy dialogue convened by MSD and Africa Health Business (AHB) at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Awareness Key to Cervical Cancer Prevention
According to Mjekula, increasing awareness about cervical cancer is an important component of Ghana’s prevention strategy.

She said sustained public education can help women better understand the importance of screening and encourage them to seek screening services regularly.

The collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and other partners is therefore aimed at supporting efforts to reach women and communities with information about cervical cancer prevention and the importance of early detection.

Early Detection Can Improve Access to Care

Mjekula explained that screening plays an important role in identifying women who may be affected by cervical cancer at an early stage.

Early detection, she noted, gives health professionals an opportunity to identify women who may require further care and connect them with appropriate healthcare services.

She stressed the importance of ensuring that women are aware of available screening opportunities and understand why regular screening can be an important part of protecting their health.

The emphasis on awareness and screening forms part of broader efforts to strengthen cancer prevention and early detection in Ghana, particularly among women who may benefit from timely access to healthcare services.

The high-level policy dialogue brought together stakeholders to discuss issues related to cancer prevention and women’s health, with attention to approaches that can support stronger prevention, awareness and early detection efforts.
