The family of Stephen Ntim, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has requested the party to allow him to temporarily step back from his duties due to health concerns.
The family cited “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation” as reasons for their request.
The request comes ahead of a crucial meeting the party was scheduled to hold.
The family, in the letter signed by Kingsley Oteng (the family head) and Adelaide Ntim (his sister and Nsuta/Kwaman Beposo lawmaker) emphasized the need for Mr. Ntim to abstain from political activities, particularly the upcoming leadership meeting he was scheduled to chair on June 17.
They expressed concerns that continued participation would jeopardize his health, given his current medical condition.
The letter addressed to the Council of Elders highlighted Mr. Ntim’s long-standing commitment to the NPP, noting his dedication to the party’s ideals.
After 20 years of aspiring to the top position, Mr. Ntim was finally elected as National Chairman in 2022, winning with 4,014 votes.
However, his tenure as Chairman was marked by a major electoral defeat in the 2024 elections, prompting the establishment of a 12-member committee to investigate the party’s loss.
The NPP has yet to respond to the request. If granted, the party’s First Vice Chairman, Danquah Smith Buttey, might assume some responsibilities in Ntim’s absence, per the party’s constitution.
