Chairman Wontumi denies dragging NPP National Council into public comments

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has rejected claims that he referenced the party’s National Council in his recent engagements with supporters.

In a strongly worded statement dated Sunday, September 28, 2025, Chairman Wontumi said comments attributed to him were being “misconstrued” and painted as though he was attacking the party’s leadership.

“As a senior member of the party, I would want to set the records straight before his statement forcefully paints me as an antagonist of our beloved party,” he said.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman, his recent public engagements were focused on the history of the NPP and its prospects of returning to power in 2028 under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I touched on the history of our party and how it can position us to win back power in 2028 with Dr Bawumia,” he explained.

Chairman Wontumi argued that he merely used historical references to draw lessons for the party ahead of the next election.

“In 1995, executives of the NPP mainly Regional Chairmen were the only group mandated by the party to vote… Mr Kufuor was given another chance in 1998 by the party delegates at Sunyani when they voted for him,” he said, adding that the former president had a “two-year advantage” over his main opponent, Prof. John Atta Mills, heading into the 2000 elections.

“To link this to our current situation, Dr Bawumia, is looking for 9% to win the NPP the 2028 election,” he noted.

He stressed that at no point did he drag the National Council into his comments, describing such claims as unfounded.

“Throughout my engagement with people, I have never dragged in the name of our National Council and that is easily verifiable from videos shared online,” he insisted.

Chairman Wontumi also expressed disappointment in the General Secretary’s handling of the matter, saying a simple clarification could have resolved the issue.

“In this era where saboteurs can easily use tools such as AI to destroy good people, Mr. Kodua Frimpong could have simply reached out to me and gotten a full understanding of my statements before issuing a statement that is far from the truth,” he said.
