Chairman Wontumi granted GH¢1m bail, to return to court Tuesday over galamsey case

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail after reporting to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.

The NPP stalwart was granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties, which he has fulfilled.

He is expected to appear before the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, where three mining-related charges will be brought against him.

Chairman Wontumi’s meeting with the CID followed a directive from the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who had warned last Friday that the politician would be arrested if he failed to honour the police invitation over allegations of illegal mining.

His lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, speaking to journalists after the engagement, said his client was prepared to cooperate fully with investigators but cautioned against any effort to revoke his existing police enquiry bail, stressing that such a move would be “vigorously resisted.”
