CHASS proposes Special Police Unit to tackle indiscipline in schools

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has called on the Education Minister to consider the creation of a dedicated unit within the Ghana Police Service to handle security in senior high schools across the country.

The proposal, submitted to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during a meeting in Sunyani, reflects growing concern among headteachers over rising indiscipline and safety challenges in secondary schools.

CHASS believes that existing security arrangements, mostly involving private security personnel are inadequate due to a lack of training and authority to effectively maintain order.

They argue that posting trained police officers at school exits and key points could deter misconduct and improve student behaviour.

“Security in our schools is no longer something we can take lightly,” a representative from CHASS stated.

“We need professional support to ensure that students not only feel safe, but also understand the boundaries of discipline.”
