Chieftaincy remains a source of insecurity in Ghana – President Akufo-Addo

Outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has expressed concern over the lingering chieftaincy disputes in Ghana, describing them as a “growing source of insecurity” that requires attention.

During his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament in Accra on Friday, January 3, 2025, Akufo-Addo noted that despite efforts to resolve these disputes, some areas, including Bawku, remain unresolved.

“It is a matter of great regret and distress to me personally that, in spite of our best efforts, the Bawku conflict remains unresolved,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo, however, commended the resolution of the conflict in Dagbon, describing it as one of the “highwater marks” of his time in office.

“Bringing peace to Dagbon remains one of the highwater marks of my time in office,” he said.

Akufo-Addo emphasized the need to strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs and the Peace Council to deal with chieftaincy and other disputes.
