Christian Council Condemns Public Nudity at Karnival Kingdom Festival

The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has issued a strong statement supporting the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) regarding the troubling incidents at the Karnival Kingdom Festival, held from 22–28 April 2026.

The CCG unequivocally condemns public nudity displayed during the festival, labeling it an offense against public decency and a clear violation of Section 278 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). According to the Council, such acts erode societal values and threaten the moral fabric that defines Ghanaian culture.

Of particular concern are reports that some participants engaged in these acts under police protection, prompting questions about the role of state institutions tasked with upholding the law. The Council echoes calls, including those of John Ntim Fordjour, for a full, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event, including the issuance of permits and the deployment of security personnel.

The Council stresses the importance of accountability in governance. Public institutions must enforce the law consistently, and any perceived endorsement or shielding of unlawful behavior undermines their integrity.

Conducting a thorough and independent investigation with findings made public.
Reviewing the event permitting process with clear guidelines on public decency.
Ensuring accountability for misuse of state resources, including police protection.
Initiating a national dialogue on the boundaries of cultural expression in public spaces.

In conclusion, the CCG warns that the incidents at the Karnival Kingdom Festival represent a serious challenge to the rule of law and Ghanaian values. The Council stands with the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in calling for urgent corrective action to prevent such incidents in the future.
