The Christian Council of Ghana says it will formally request a copy of the amended Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, from Parliament for a detailed legal review before taking an official position on the legislation.
The Council explained that it was involved in the early stages of the bill’s development and considers it important to examine any amendments and exemptions introduced in the latest version.
Speaking at the launch of the Voice of the Christian Council of Ghana on Friday, June 5, Chairman of the Ecumenical Convention Planning Committee, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, said the Council would rely on legal advice before commenting on the revised provisions.
According to him, the Council will write officially to the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to obtain a copy of the bill and assess its contents thoroughly.
“We cannot speak in a vacuum. We have been advised, and so the Christian Council will do the proper thing by writing officially to the Clerk of Parliament for a copy of the Bill that has been passed. Whatever is happening in Parliament, we leave that for the MPs; the Christian Council is not part of it. The Christian Council will come out with a very refined and considered opinion,” Mr Anyidoho stated.
He emphasized that the Council would refrain from making further public comments until its legal team had completed a comprehensive review of the amended legislation.
The development follows a directive by Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin for Parliament to revisit the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill after consultations aimed at building broader consensus on the proposed law.
