The Centre for International Maritime Affairs, Ghana (CIMAG) has commended the government and President John Dramani Mahama for launching the construction of a Sea Defence wall at Agavedzi and surrounding communities in Accra.
In a statement released on July 21, 2022, CIMAG expressed admiration for the initiative, which aims to address the challenges of coastal erosion and tidal wave destruction in the area.
“CIMAG is highly impressed by this initiative aimed at addressing the challenges of coastal erosion and tidal wave destruction in the area,” the statement read.
However, CIMAG cautioned that while the Sea Defence wall is crucial in protecting communities and infrastructure, contractors must consider biodiversity conservation in the scope of work.
“We emphasize the need for contractors to take biodiversity conservation into consideration in the scope of work,” the statement added.
Executive Director of CIMAG, Albert Derrick Fiatui, also highlighted that rock sea defence walls are not a permanent solution to Ghana’s coastal erosion challenges.
“The erection of Rock Sea defence walls, though a response to severe tidal wave destruction and coastal erosion, is not a permanent solution to the core challenges facing Ghana’s coastline,” he noted.
CIMAG has expressed willingness to collaborate with the Presidency, ministries, and stakeholders to contribute its research findings in seeking sustainable solutions to coastal erosion in Ghana and Africa.
“CIMAG stands ready to work with the Presidency, ministries, and all stakeholders to contribute its research findings in seeking sustainable solutions to coastal erosion in Ghana and Africa,” the statement stated.
