CJ Nominee Justice Baffoe-Bonnie Wins Parliament’s Approval for Chief Justice Position

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, the nominee for Chief Justice of Ghana, has successfully passed the parliamentary vetting process, with the Appointments Committee of Parliament recommending his approval for the position.

The committee, led by Chair Bernard Ahiafor, hailed Baffoe-Bonnie for his deep understanding of the law, judicial ethics, and his impressive competence in handling complex legal questions.

In a statement delivered to Parliament on Thursday, Ahiafor noted that Baffoe-Bonnie had shown “outstanding competence, a profound grasp of legal principles, and the professionalism necessary for the role of Chief Justice.” According to the committee, his responses during the vetting were marked by clarity, intellectual rigor, and a firm commitment to upholding the judiciary’s integrity.

The nomination process, which began on Monday, November 10, saw Justice Baffoe-Bonnie addressing a range of critical questions concerning Ghana’s judiciary. During the session, Baffoe-Bonnie acknowledged the significance of the task before him, emphasizing the judiciary’s responsibility to restore public confidence amidst growing skepticism and demands for transparency.

“We stand at a defining moment in the history of Ghana’s judiciary,” Baffoe-Bonnie remarked. “I am fully aware that this process is not just a constitutional formality—it is a reflection of the trust the people of Ghana place in the judicial system.”

Despite initial controversy surrounding the nomination, with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin labeling Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as a “disputed nominee,” the session proceeded without significant disruption.
