The five-member committee set up by President John Dramani Mahama to investigate three petitions filed against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will commence hearings today, Thursday, May 15, 2025.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was established in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, following a determination of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday afternoon that the committee will “sit three times a week and present their recommendations to the President upon completion of their work.”
The committee’s establishment follows President Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on April 22, 2025, after determining a prima facie case in consultation with the Council of State concerning three separate petitions.
Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, a Justice of the Supreme Court, has assumed the role of Acting Chief Justice in line with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution.
