CJ’s Suspension: NDP foot soldiers disassociate themselves from NPP’s May 5 ‘unlawful’ protest

The grassroots members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) have formally disassociated themselves from the upcoming demonstration planned by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) scheduled for May 5, 2025, in Accra against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

In a statement signed by Owusu-Cobbiah Richard, founder of the association, the party’s foot soldiers expressed their commitment to upholding the law and respecting others’ rights.

“We consider this demonstration unnecessary and potentially harmful,” the statement read.

The NDP foot soldiers emphasized their organization’s values of good governance, peacefulness, probity, and accountability, stating that they do not condone unlawful activities.

The group described the planned demonstration as “unlawful,” and urged members to distance themselves from it.

“The Law Is the Law,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal frameworks.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) has also distanced itself from the planned demonstration.

In a press release dated April 26, GUM’s General Secretary Anthony Ahinful, stated that the party was not informed or consulted about the demonstration and does not endorse it.

“G.U.M had never been informed, engaged or the party’s consent sought in any official meeting to that effect,” the release read.

GUM emphasized its commitment to democracy and the rule of law, suggesting that any disputes concerning the Chief Justice should be handled through legal means.

“G.U.M believes in democracy and the rule of law and such a case concerning the Honorable Chief Justice should be handled through legal means,” the party stated.
