CLOGSAG Suspends Nationwide Strike Following Withdrawal of Seth Botchwey’s Appointment

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following President John Mahama’s decision to withdraw the appointment of Seth Botchwey as the Registrar of the Birth and Death Registry.

CLOGSAG had threatened to strike on February 20, deeming Mr. Botchwey a “politically exposed” person.

In a statement issued on February 13, 2025, Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe explained that the National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG made the decision during a meeting held on February 11, 2025, to address concerns about the appointment of politically exposed individuals in the Civil Service and Local Governments. He stated, “The National Executive Council (NEC) decided that should Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway assume office as Registrar of Births and Deaths Registry, CLOGSAG should declare a nationwide strike.”

In addition to this, CLOGSAG announced it has compiled a list of five hundred politically exposed persons in the Civil Service and intends to take action against them. Bampoe noted, “After our statement, we have had various discussions with the presidency. They assured us about the appointment, so we appreciate what the president has done with this twenty-four-hour response. We will collaborate with the President to reset the Civil Service.”

This development highlights CLOGSAG’s commitment to ensuring political neutrality within the Civil Service and the importance of collaborative efforts to maintain the integrity of government institutions.
