Cocoa Alone Can’t Sustain Ghana’s Future”- Asantehene

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has called for the diversification of Ghana’s economy beyond cocoa, urging both government and citizens to focus on a broader agricultural strategy to drive national growth.

Speaking at the 2026 Ghana Tree Crops Investment Summit and Exhibition, the Asantehene acknowledged cocoa’s longstanding contribution to the nation’s economic development, noting that it has been a symbol of resilience and discipline. For decades, cocoa has been the backbone of Ghana’s agricultural exports, supporting rural livelihoods, driving education, and bolstering Ghana’s global reputation as a leading producer.

However, the Asantehene warned that cocoa’s future is increasingly under threat due to various challenges, including pollution from illegal mining, unpredictable climate patterns, and growing pest pressures. These factors have already begun to impact yields, and the Asantehene believes this signals the need for a more sustainable and diversified economic model.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II advocated for the development of additional tree crops such as cashew, coconut, oil palm, rubber, mango, and shea. He believes these crops not only have economic potential but also align with global market trends and ecological needs.

“The vision is not speculative,” the Asantehene remarked. “It’s grounded in economic logic, ecological necessity, and the demands of the global market. As such, it deserves sustained attention, national support, and investment.”
