Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has explained that the decision not to auction the 5G spectrum is aimed at improving data access and preventing a monopoly in the industry.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said the government learned from its experience with the 4G spectrum auction, which saw MTN dominating the market and pushing out smaller operators.
Instead, the government will provide a shared infrastructure for all network operators, including new entrants, to ensure fair distribution of data access.
The decision was made in collaboration with industry players, including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and others, who will roll out 5G in the next six months.
“Monopoly in data services is not good… we need to ensure data access is fairly distributed,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said.
