Condemnation of Proposed Youth Protest and Support for UHAS Honorary Degree Ceremony

The Volta Resistance Movement (VRM) strongly condemns the proposed protest by some youth groups against the University of Health and Allied Sciences’ (UHAS) decision to honor President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo with an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

The group urges all citizens of the Volta Region to refrain from participating in this demonstration, which we believe sets a dangerous precedent.

According to the group, the right to peaceful protest, we must consider the broader implications of this action. Protesting the honor bestowed upon the President could lead to similar actions in other regions, potentially denying Volta citizens opportunities to be recognized or receive awards elsewhere for parallel reasons. Such a precedent undermines the spirit of unity and mutual respect that should define our national ethos.

“The decision by UHAS to confer this honorary degree is based on the President’s notable contributions to education and the development of science and technology in Ghana. His Free Senior High School policy, emphasis on STEM education, and support for the UHAS Phase 2 expansion project are commendable and deserving of recognition.”

The $60 million expansion project, which includes the construction of the Central Administration complex, the largest School of Nursing and Midwifery in West Africa, and a state-of-the-art Simulation Centre, has significantly bolstered the capacity and reputation of UHAS.

We call on UHAS to proceed with their planned ceremony without hesitation. This recognition not only honors the President but also highlights the advancements in education and healthcare infrastructure that benefit the entire nation.

Additionally, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and all those who have contributed to the establishment and growth of UHAS, particularly the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, whose vision and efforts laid the foundation for this esteemed institution.

As the Volta Resistance Movement, we stand firmly in support of UHAS and its decision. We encourage all citizens of the Volta Region to embrace this moment with pride and unity, celebrating the strides made in education and development that benefit us all.
