Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested two suspects and seized boxes of counterfeit Killit insecticide spray during a special operation aimed at curbing the sale of fake products in Kumasi.
The arrests were made following a series of complaints lodged by Miswa Chemicals Limited, the sole importer of Killit spray in Ghana.
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Officer, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, the operation was carried out by the crime unit after a tip-off from the company’s representative, Madam Abigail Del.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, July 18, 2025, DSP Ahianyo said the suspects, 30-year-old Charity Bokye and 60-year-old Jacob Abekah, were caught distributing the counterfeit insecticide, which had been imported from Nigeria.
“These fake products are being passed off as genuine Killit spray, deceiving the public and putting both consumers and businesses at risk. We are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious products or sellers to help us tackle this issue.” He said.
Madam Abigail Del expressed deep concern about the impact of the counterfeit sprays on both consumer safety and company reputation.
She explained that customers had raised concerns about the effectiveness of the product, prompting her team to carry out market surveillance.
“What we found was shocking. These counterfeit sprays are nearly identical in appearance to the original, but do not deliver the same results. We had no choice but to report it to the authorities.” She said
A sales representative from Miswa Chemicals also pointed out subtle differences between the authentic and fake sprays, warning buyers to be cautious and purchase from authorised vendors only.
The police say investigations are ongoing, and they encourage anyone with information about similar counterfeit activities to come forward.
This operation is part of broader efforts by law enforcement to clamp down on the spread of counterfeit goods in the region and protect both consumers and legitimate businesses.
