Court declares King Tackie Adama Latse II as the legitimate Ga Mantse

The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has unanimously confirmed Boni King Tackie Adama Latse II as the lawful Ga Mantse.

The decision, delivered on June 12, upholds a 2021 Kumasi High Court ruling and brings a definitive legal end to years of intense chieftaincy dispute.

The three-member appellate panel dismissed appeals filed by both the National House of Chiefs and Nii Tetteh Ashong V, ordering the House to re-enter King Tackie Adama Latse II’s name into its register within 14 days.

The court also imposed GH₵30,000 in costs on the National House of Chiefs and GH₵20,000 on Nii Tetteh Ashong V for pursuing what the judges deemed unfounded challenges.

For years, the Ga chieftaincy title has been hotly contested, fueling divisions and disrupting traditional governance. Despite a 2021 High Court ruling in King Latse II’s favour, the National House of Chiefs delayed official recognition—sparking ongoing legal and traditional tensions.

“This ruling affirms not just King Latse II’s legitimacy, but the authority of our courts in safeguarding chieftaincy integrity,” said a Kumasi-based legal expert.

Cultural analysts echoed this sentiment, calling the judgment a bold step in restoring order to Ghana’s traditional leadership processes.

Supporters of King Latse II celebrated the news with joy, hailing the ruling as a turning point for peace, unity, and progress in the Ga State. Many expressed hope that the decision will pave the way for healing after years of discord.

With just two weeks to act, the National House of Chiefs faces mounting pressure to comply. Legal observers say the verdict sets a strong precedent for how chieftaincy disputes are handled nationwide—anchoring tradition firmly within the framework of the law.
